Art Criticism

Art Criticism

In today's blog post, we are going to critic or judge two artworks from the web.

The first artwork is from an artist from Indonesia. His name is Hendra Gunawan. The name of this artwork is called 'Family Portrait'.

This painting consists of five people in the foreground. There are two females and three males who are in pose for a family portrait. In the background, there are a lot of other families. The colours used are warm colours.

The painting is made from, oil on canvas, a medium which is hard to handle. The background which consists of a lot of other people suggests that there is an event  happening. However, the man who is sitting, is being focused. His skin has splashes of yellow, green and blue which makes him stand out. Perhaps it shows that he is important to the family, may be the leader of the family.

The painting depicts a family portrait whereby a lady is weariing batik clothes. This picture looks like a family reunion as the man's clothes is a little different in terms of type. Only the man is wearing pants made of different type of cloth. While his family is wearing clothes  made from the same kind of cloth.

Comparing this artwork from his other artworks, this artwork gives viewers a humble and solemn feeling. While other of his artworks use vibrant colours. This shows that this painting was painted in a formal feeling. Something that is worth to remember would be the way everyone in the painting is dressed. It shows that they do not have a lot of money to buy stylish clothings and they practice their culture.

The next artwork is from a european artist named Anthony Gormley. The artwork is called 'European Field'.

Moving in: An empty Tudor manor house has been transformed into an amazing art exhibition with 40,000 small clay figuresI think this artworks takes a lot of time and effort as it has 40,000 clay figures placed in the room. I think that the figures might represent the people of Europe as there are some clay figures with different colours. I think the two people posing at the back are just playing around with the figures as they look like they are having fun. This artwork has been placed in the Tudor Manor in New Zealand for an art exhibition.

In our opinion, this is an amazing artwork as it has a wonderful view of these little people and we hope to go to the manor to experience it ourselves. However we still have questions regarding the artwork. Why must it be 40000 clay figures? Why small figures?

With that we hope that you will read and like what we have posted for today. Thank You

    1. I think the artist wanted to do a field of Europeans by making small clay figures to reprresent them.
